Why Massage?

Massage encompasses a vast range of styles and techniques, which all use a combination of physical touch and pressure to provide relief and relaxation of mind and body.

Benefits of Massage for Physical Health

Massage has a range of well-documented physical benefits brought about by applying pressure to the body’s muscles at different depths and speeds. This has been shown to:

  • Improve circulation by temporarily increasing blood flow to massaged areas

  • Reduce muscle and fascia tension by stretching the underlying tissue with the pressure applied by the therapist

  • Reduce feelings of stress by downregulating the sympathetic nervous system

  • Promote physical relaxation by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system

  • Alter the perception of pain and stiffness in joints, muscles and tendons

  • Increase the range of motion in stiff joints, muscles and movements

Benefits of Massage for Mental Health

As human beings, physical touch is incredibly important to our overall health and mental wellbeing. As a hands-on therapy, massage has been proven to stimulate the release of lots of ‘feel-good’ endorphins, such as serotonin and dopamine, and reduce levels of stress-related hormones in the body, such as cortisol. In combination, this can lead to:

  • Improved mood

  • Reduced feelings of anxiety

  • Reduced feelings of stress and loneliness

  • Better sleep

  • Improved body confidence

I am training in Soft Tissue Therapy, which applies classical massage techniques for the benefit of aches, pains and other musculoskeletal issues. This means that my style incorporates elements of Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue and Sports Massage, and most importantly, will always be tailored to your needs.
